Map: SalzkammergutThe Salzkammergut is a resort area east of Salzburg, Austria, spanning the federal states of Upper Austria, Salzburg, and Styria. The name is goes back to the Salt mining traditions in Hallstadt, Bad Ischl and Altausee. It used to be the main trade good in the late bronze time, making it a cradle of Austrian culture. Nowadays, salt is still an important economic factor in this region.

Apart of mining, the area of the Salzkammergut is more famous for its scenic beauty, its wonderful clean basin lakes, formed through ice-age glaciers and its skiing resorts. In the southern part of Salzkammergut there is the town of Hallstatt, which was listed as a World Heritage Site in 1997.
