Photos - Venice (Italy) 

Venice, which is often nicknamed "Queen of the Adriatic", stretches across numerous small islands in the marshy Venetian lagoon along the Adriatic Sea in northeast Italy between the mouths of the rivers Po and Piave. The historic city of Venice has about 60000 inhabitants, another 30000 people live on other islands in the lagoon.

The buildings of Venice are constructed on closely spaced wooden piles which penetrate alternating layers of clay and sand. Most of these piles are still intact after centuries of submersion, since wood does not decay in absence of oxygen. The foundations rest on the piles, and buildings of brick or stone sit above these footings....
